On a moon bright night in the pine flatwoods of South Georgia, a faction of the Klan prowls. Hattie Hodge, a freed African slave, is pulled from her cabin. She is brutally raped and her husband hanged. Hattie is bound, then dumped into the black water of the Okefenokee Swamp along with her husband's body.

An aged Seminole medicine woman, Chechoter, witnesses the atrocity and rescues Hattie moments before the dark-skinned woman sinks into the abyss.
