London 1811. To protect the dubious reputations of both himself and a courtesan, worldly, bored Lord Roderick Davenant, head of a disreputable family, takes home and consigns to the care of his servants seven-year old Addy, a climbing boy -- sweep's apprentice -- who accidentally falls down the bedroom chimney while Davenant and the courtesan are having sex.

Davenant's groom, Henry, discovers that Addy is not the usual rough, illiterate climbing boy. He has a gentleman's manners, is literate, speaks elegant French and claims he lives with his grandfather in a castle near "a sleeping giant." Henry believes him the victim of "a jacketing concern," underworld cant for the usurpation of a person from their wealth and position by someone who takes them for himself. A first sceptical about the boy, Davenant changes his mind when he learns Addy knows Latin, which would give him entree to a public school. Davenant accepts a wager from a young man with a grudge against him, and the Prince Regent, to find Addy's family in three weeks. He is aided by such diverse characters as Henry, an independent minded Quaker heiress, a brothel madam and Bodger, a worldly climbing boy.
